Racing to the Bottom: Our Deportation Policies Reveal a Sinister Side of American Character
It seems a waste of precious time lamenting about America not being the place it used to be-- or being nostalgic about a time past when the United States of America had a recognizably noble mission on the global stage. A mission beyond the furthering of US corporate and strategic military interests by taking the fight to Communists, dictators, and repressive regimes around the world. At least, that's the sanitized version of an America that has devolved into democratic cynicism, economic cannibalism, and political corruption. We are racing to the bottom, and our deportation policies reveal something sinister about America's newly adopted national character.
The Trump administration's immigration policies are hailed by his supporters as a victory in the keeping of a major campaign promise to deport criminal aliens who pose existential threats to our Republic. However, the zealous enforcement of immigration policies has led to a series of actions that have profoundly impacted both citizens and noncitizens alike. Central to this transformation is a violently forceful approach to the apprehension, detention, and deportation of individuals, including children. The administration's aggressive tactics have not only targeted undocumented immigrants-- they have ensared legal residents and US citizens, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty throughout the country.
Reports continue to emerge detailing the deportation of children, including US citizens, who are caught in the crossfire of these policies. For example, a 10-year old girl recovering from cancer was deported alongside her undocumented parents, illustrating the inhumane consequences of an administration that prioritizes enforcement over compassion and due process. This alarming trend raises important questions about the legal and moral implications of our deportation practices, particularly as they relate to the fundamental rights of individuals living in the US.
As the Trump administration continues to implement its harsh immigration policies, the role of key figures like Marco Rubio becomes increasingly significant. Secretary of State Rubio's support for these extralegal executive orders and his defense of the administration's deportation of legal residents and the rescinding of student visas for international students.

Our leadership role on the global stage will depend on our commitment to upholding the values that define America. If we continue to succomb to the politics of fear and division, our race to the bottom will leave us as a second-rate nation with an anxious citizenry and uncertain future. future generations will lament about the opportunity this generation squandered in saving a misguided political class from its excesses and hubris; andnhow this generation failed to stand up to the isolationists and xenophobes that failed the American people.
